Michael Northrop, an American photographer born in 1948, takes the snapshot style to a whole new level. Northrop approaches photography with a playful spirit, never taking himself too seriously and always ready to inject a bit of humor into his art. Northrup’s instagram bio simply says…I love irony…and his work often blends the perfect moment with an unexpected twist. Examples like…Beautiful scenery with the subject in the foreground blurred and obscuring the view or an elegant portrait, but after close examination the subject's eyelids are turned inside out. Northrop's compositions are a deliberate departure from the conventional. He's known for cutting off body parts, faces, and scenes, leaving you with a fragmented yet intriguing glimpse into his subjects' worlds. The camera is a mischievous companion, and his subjects are well aware, engaging in a playful dance with Northrop's lens. Being shot at waist level, many of Northrop's images offer a childlike perspective, adding a sense of innocence to the narrative. The playful and quick nature of his work may feel naive at first, but the compositions have a magnetic quality that draws you in, asking you to explore the subtle details hidden within. Enter 'Dream Away,' released in 2018, a book that seems to unfold the chapters of Northrop's personal life. The series of images show us a chronological walk through the tender moments with his partner, surrounding the birth of their child.
