Cinestill 800T

Today I wanted to talk about Cinestill 800T. At 15 bucks a roll this film can be a little intimidating…so let’s talk about it a little before you head out and shot.

Cinestill 800T is an 800 ISO film based on old Kodak motion picture film. The folks over at Cinestill figured out that if you remove the Remjet layer of the emulsion, the film can be processed in standard C-41 Chemicals. This is super convenient for film photographers, but it comes at a cost.

The only problem with removing this layer is that the highlights in the photographs can really go wild. Any lightsource in your image will have this white or pink glowing orb abound it. The orbs are called halations.

Personally, I love the the vintage looking effect, but it’s not for everyone…So check out some portrait shoots I made and you can decide for yourself if it’s worth the money to give it a shot.

In the video I’ll show you how I use light from parking garages, gas stations, or storefronts to illuminate the scene…as well as using some affordable RGB LEDs from Amazon to supplement the ambient light or emulate break lights from a car or additional light from the scene.
